The American College of Rheumatology is an international medical society with 8,000 members worldwide. Our members are rheumatologists (doctors who treat arthritis and rheumatic disease) and rheumatology health professionals (e.g., nurses, physician assistants, OTs, PTs, etc.). We are headquartered in Atlanta, GA.

Social Media Initiatives

We have created a recently created a Facebook page (August 2008), and the two audiences we hope to reach with it are:

  • prospective/current patient advocates - those who will contact Congress/visit the Hill on behalf of rheumatology-specific issues.
  • young members and prospective young members, specifically, those in internal medicine residency programs who plan to pursue rheumatology as a career. Eventually we'd like to expand this to include residents in internal medicine who may be interested in rheumatology, as well as medical students.

We are thinking about whether or not we should create two different Facebook pages, one for each of these purposes. Right now, we're focusing on the patient advocates effort. By that I mean we're gathering content, etc. to post. We plan to visit related FB sites to post messages and hopefully drive people to our site. We'd love any and all feedback/suggestions.

I'll submit this as a separate Wiki entry, but we've also created two Facebook pages for our related Foundation, and have gotten some very preliminary positive feedback. Search American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation for that entry - Tammy J. Tilley, Senior Director, Communications, Marketing and Membership, ACR
